H/3's Partnership with New Mexico Wildlife Center |
|
Nestled in the high desert outside Española, New Mexico, the New Mexico Wildlife Center ("NMWC") is the only major wildlife rescue in the northwestern part of the state, and also the premier family-focused destination to learn about native wildlife in New Mexico. Each year, the center admits hundreds of injured and orphaned wild animals, treating them with the goal of returning them to the wild.
Starting in 2021, H/3 Foundation developed the idea to endow a full-time veterinarian position at the NMWC. H/3 proposed the idea following a visit, together with a grant from H/3 for the renovation and improvement of raptor mews. H/3's program has been a big success for NMWC over the ensuing four+ years. NMWC's hospital now admits and treats between 650 and 900 patients of more than 120 species a year. In 2025, NMWC admitted and cared for 1,085 injured and orphaned native wild animals representing over 160 different species. The H/3 staff veterinarian also conducts professional training on wildlife veterinary topics for other wildlife veterinarians and rescues across the southwestern United States. |
