Dr. Elisa Mazzaferro, Chief Medical Advisor
Dr. Elisa Mazzaferro is the Chief Medical Advisor to H/3 Foundation, where she works closely with the Chief Executive Officer in support of its direct action initiatives. A board‑certified specialist in veterinary emergency and critical care with more than two decades of clinical, academic and leadership experience, Dr. Mazzaferro also serves as a Hospitalist at Cornell University Veterinary Specialists, where she provides support for emergency surgery. Elisa additionally works full‑time with Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice and advises Critical Consults. Dr. Mazzaferro is passionate about educating veterinary colleagues globally, having lectured in more than 12 countries and 29 states, authored four veterinary textbooks, and served as first author of numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed manuscripts on topics related to emergency and critical care.
Dr. Mazzaferro’s career includes more than 20 years of contributions to emergency and critical care veterinary medicine. Earlier in her career, she spent a ten-year tenure as Director of the Emergency Department at a large referral hospital in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, before returning to her home state of Connecticut as a Staff Criticalist at Cornell University Veterinary Specialists. Dr. Mazzaferro received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University, followed by an internship in Emergency and Critical Care at the Veterinary Institute of Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a residency in Emergency and Critical Care alongside a PhD at Colorado State University. She became board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2002.
A Connecticut native, Dr. Mazzaferro shares her home with her fiancé Tom and her devoted four pets: her beloved pug Minnie, Shih Tzu Kramer, and two precious Bombay cats, Lulu and Bean.
